Protein Skimmer maintenance

Hello, I’m upgrading a small 5.5 gallon nano tank to a 25 gallon tank, either IM or Red Sea. They both have a protein skimmer. I’ve never had one as I just do water changes every 1-2 weeks and it’s worked well for 3 years+. What kind of maintenance does a skimmer need. Can it cause a leak/overflow in the chamber if the cup fills and I’m not there to clean it out? I’m considering not even using the skimmer with a tank this small but it may help for algae. Curious if these can cause issues if they break or are not maintained well. Sometimes I travel for a week so that is why I ask. Thanks

I clean my skimmer about every 6 months, otherwise I just empty the cup out ever few days.

The skimmer cup can overflow if its not emptied, but if you have a sump it will overflow into your sump so no big deal, it won't make the sump overflow.

Skimmer is not really needed if you don't want it on that size tank. However, they do provide good filtration, and also the added benefit of oxygenating the water, which gets harder to do as you increase the tank size.

The only regular maintenance for a skimmer is to empty and clean the cup. I do this about a few times a week for all of my skimmers. Then occasionally (one a year or so for me) I completely clean the skimmer body and pump.
I don’t know what tank or skimmer you’re getting, but as long as the skimmer is in the sump or back chamber then all the skimmer overflowing will do is cause the skimmate and water to go back into the tank. It should only cause a leak if it’s a HOB skimmer or external (which it won’t be for this size tank).

Thanks for the reply all. Very helpful! I’m looking at an AIO tank, IM lagoon or Red Sea Nano G2 peninsula, that have back chambers where the skimmer would go. My concern was if the cup fills and I’m not there to clean it. Sounds like it won’t be an issue though. Worst case the skimmer and water would go back into the tank which isn’t ideal but wouldn’t cause any type of overflow or leak that I should be concerned about.
