What are your thought on protein skimmers. I was wondering if they are really essential for the stability in an aquarium?
Thanks for your comments and points of view.

They help quite a bit. Protein skimmers physically remove particulate and dissolved organics from the aquarium water, otherwise consumed by the livestock in your tank. It creates a concentrated organic waste (skim-mate) which is a combination of tiny particles of organic matter, algae and dissolved organic wastes. he concept behind protein skimming is to strip out the complex organics compounds before they can break down and release harmful nitrate, phosphate and other pollutants

I would not run a tank without one.
They oxygenate the water, and just look at what they remove from your system.
