If you remove the needle wheel pump and replace with a circulation pump the skimmer won’t foam properly.

You might find a dc controllable needle wheel pump but why do you want to change it? Should work with the stock pump.

yes it would be with a needle wheel dc pump. was reading that a dc pump is adjustable and could get better control of bubble size small bubble wet skim large bubble dry skim. just wonder if it can be done and has anyone done and got better results

Probably can be done but wet skim vs dry skim isn't about bubble size really. You want small bubbles for most efficient skimming. Wet or dry depends on other things like water height in the skimmer, water flow through the skimmer, and amount of air going through the pump into the skimmer.

Is this a skimmer in operation and you are trying to adjust it?

I did change out one of my skimmer pumps to the dc version and it really had no benefit IMO I ended up changing it back and stuck with the regular pump.
