You simply can, but sometimes simple and cheap isn't the best solution.

Alu profile allows for infinite adjustment in placing pipe brackets along the axis - something you can not easily do with a strip of wood.

Took some pics for you - this should explain it.

The bolt and nut should match whatever the slot size in the profile is. I use mostly 45*45 profile with 10mm slot. Make sure the bolt is not too long as to bottom out inside the slot before you fully tighten it.

How do you cut the aluminum so nicely? Mine look like I had the beaver cutting it.....
