I've had a Frogspawn for over a year now, but it's always been this funny tan color. It's healthy as far as I can tell (it's grown another 2 heads since I got it and has grown a ton). Is that normal for whatever type of frogspawn it is?

The only reason I ask is because when it closes up at night, or if you bother it and it shrinks up, it has this nice hint of teal near the base of the tentacles (the tips always stay white) and I'm wondering why.

I'm not worried about it, I'm just curious about why its colored the way it is. Like is it a certain coloration or can I be doing something different to color it up? I don't care either way. Despite the color I love the way it looks and if it's happy, I'm happy.

I've attached a pic for ya.

Everything looks Happy and healthy to me. To answer your question about color, when it is close you will get a more vibrant visual color because the cells are close together. When it is puffed up and open, the "blue or teal" cells are further away from each other making it looks more of a white when in fact it is a very light teal. Hope this makes sense. Best example is anemones do the same thing. Looks brighter and fuller when partially close vs when fully open.

Oh I see! That makes perfect sense actually. I'd love for it to keep that pretty teal color when its puffed up, but as long as its healthy, I'm happy :) I love the way it looks when it gets all poofy. So thanks for teaching me something!

One more question.... I think I read somewhere that when the mouth is exposed like it is in the photo, it means the coral is "happy". Is that true? It just recently started keeping that one head open all the time. Usually it's a bit tighter up and I have a hard time feeding it cuz I can't figure out where the different "heads" are.

The euphyillia(in this case your Frogspawn) are happy when their tentacles are big a puffy and blowing gently in the flow. When you see the "mouth" that most likely means their starting their transition to split. Next you should start to see a bubble in the middle of that head and then after a few days, weeks, maybe even a month, it will split into 2 heads and the bubble will be gone and the "mouth" won't be exposed. On the flip side, in some cases if the mouth is exposed it may be a sign of soon death. But this will come with other symptoms as well such as loss of inflation, loss of tentacles, brown "jelly" substance. And sometimes skeleton erosion. As for your scenario I would watch it but wouldn't be worried. What did you try to feed it? Most of the time I have found Cyclops works the best. I know others use Reef Roids. @larky has a beautiful Australian Euphyillia tank and may have more info their on feeding.
