QUESTION: How long did it take before your reef felt stable?

Most tanks go through ups and downs early on. At some point, many reefers hit a phase where things just feel calmer and more predictable.

How long did it take before your reef felt truly stable to you?
What changed when you reached that point?

I’m not sure but for me, it seems like my tank was pretty stable at 1 year

I'd say that my current system was stable after about the first year, but then had a number of significant hiccups over the following two. So three-ish, maybe.

Hhm, that's a tough question. I started my very 1st tank (40g) with live rock in the late 1990s. I don't remember any really ugly phases but I was using my freshwater light fixture because I had converted that tank from freshwater. I could only keep the lowest light coral like colt and cabbage leathers. Then around 2000 I bought a 90g aquarium but I got more live rock from aquariums I bought from burned out reef keepers. So it didn't go through an ugly phase until 2008 when it got cyano while I was on a 2 week mission trip and the tank got overfed. I siphoned out the cyano, did a few big water changes and the tank settled back into its normal state. I have used that same rock in the tanks that came after and never had anything more ugly than just some rust colored sand off and on. Right or wrong, I have concluded that mature live rock and detectable nutrients can help significantly with dealing with excessive uglies.

I’m always steering the ship. But as far as being proficient and maintaining stability, 2-3 years (at first). Then complacency happens and I realize I don’t know as much. Now at 8 years in, sudden instability in the tank is looked at as normal in my glass box. I can’t be on my “A” game all the time unfortunately. (My display is a smaller tank packed with sps colonies, so alk demand is very high).

Yes, this makes sense that stability would be much more difficult where coral need is always changing due to growth.
I think its the main reason that I have stayed away from keeping a lot of sps and instead have focused on mostly softies and a couple LPS where weekly water changes meet their needs and are more tolerant of the resulting fluctuations.

It may be “not yet”, but it’s probably not “never”. Unless you keep resetting your tank, there is a good chance that you’ll get there.
