Questions for those using reef moonshiners

I'm getting ready to fill up my new build hopefully in the next week or so. I've been doing some reading on the moonshiners method I like the hands on approach it seems like a good way of keeping up water parameters. How soon should I start the process? After the cycle or should I wait a while before sending out my first test? I want to avoid having to correct large swings in trace elements. Anyone have a suggestion as to a good starting point.

I waited 9 months after I started the tank until I started testing and dosing trace elements. I did the captiv8 isol method so I’d only have to dose 1 master solution. I highly recommend them over moonshiners. But I realize that’s beyond what your question asked.

I would just stick with water changes until your tank is fully stocked with coral and starting to grow in. I’ve been doing reef moonshiners for 3 or 4 years in my SPS tank. I like the method, and don’t miss water changes.

You don’t need this yet. Focus on a maintenance schedule that will keep your parameters stable.

I did moonshiner on my old cade 1200s2 and started about a year in. It made a huge difference. I just got my 1500s2p set up and was debating this question myself. I personally decided to send off the test and get started now - I've been cycled (100% Gulf live rock) and stocked with fish already for a month or so and just started adding corals.

I am thinking of starting moonshiners dosing. I have several questions for those that have been doing it for a while:
1. what do you do when you are away from home for daily dosing?
2. If you are using any type of nano dosing pump, what do you recommend?

1. You can dose double or triple the day before you leave, but I usually just skip those days.

2. I dose all my trace by hand.
