Send the plumbing/overflow/fabrication questions my way!

My knowledge of equipment, chemistry, and biology are a half decade out-of-date; so I’m sadly not much use there, and will likely be asking more questions than I answer in that regard!

How familiar are you with HDPE board?

Not at all for structural and welding applications; it’s very slippery, but very easy to machine! (Most adhesives won’t stick to it!)

I sent him in the direction of @Turbo's Aquatics acrylic fabrication guide to start learning best principles of plastics welding!

I've got a 12" DIP water main leaking in the middle of a semi major intersection. What's the best way to go about repairing it without major impact to traffic?

I don’t do too much in iron, or underground burial for vehicle traffic, but I’ll give it a shot!

Previous experience from buried fuel storage tank linings at vehicle filling stations led me to expoxy lining cast iron pipes!

I have zero experience with this process, but it appears that epoxy is injected into the DIP, and allowed to cure; thus making a watertight, and corrosion resistant interior lining!

This is not the gold standard (ripping out and replacing the damaged section, or whole run of DIP), but it does appear to be a popular sealing method!

Is the leak just due to age? Or is the ground under the intersection physically sinking, creating a low spot over the pipe which caused a crack (likely from compaction and/or improper drainage)? — the latter would merit going with replacing the section, the former could be fixed with an epoxy lining!

Technically neither... It's because the pipe wasn't wrapped with poly or treated for corrosion resistance due to hot soils. There is another option but it's very pricey - fiberglass socks blown into the pipeline creating a new corrosion resistant interior coating.

Our best option is going to be to sign up the intersection one lane at a time and replace a portion of pipeline per lane or to close the intersection and perform a point repair at the specific location of the leak. Quicker, cheaper, harder to get approved.

Oof… that can be an utter mess… I’ve got five other houses on my driveway, and just getting everyone on the same page to agree on a paving quote has been a multi-year bureaucratic nightmare…

Interesting that fiberglass is used… I suppose it makes sense for the application though!

Well, it sounds like you’ve got it figured out, and just have a LOT of legwork to do! — good luck! (Or rather; hopefully, luck isn’t involved!)
