Hello fellow hobbyists,

I recently acquired a Red Sea XL200 and have a quick question on Salinity. I've tried some calculators and searching threads, but I can't seem to form a conclusive decision on how to proceed.

My current tank is at 1.025 / 33 PPT. I want to get it to 1.025 / 35 PPT. Total water volume is 53.8 Gallons.

How can I raise the PPT from 33 to 35 in an effective manner? I should mention, I don't have any livestock in the tank yet. I have a CSB anemone along with a Sticker Shocker coral.

Thanks in advanced.

Hi! Welcome to reef 2 reef! :)

I wanted to clarify that if you have an anemone and a coral in the tank, you DO have livestock. Inverts, corals and fish all are considered livestock.

As far as salinity, if you have 33 ppt. that equals 1.0245 specific gravity.
35 ppt. equals 1.026 specific gravity

It’s fine to keep a reef tank at 1.024 to 1.026. Most people do aim to that 1.025 to 1.026 numbers.

To bring it up in the easiest manner I would suggest to just do your regular water changes using water mixed to the salinity you ultimately want to keep the tank at. This will slowly increase it without any stress to anything. In a few weeks you will be up to the salinity that you prefer. View attachment 3961512

You could just stop topping off for evaporation until it gets to where you want it, then top off to your desired water level with fresh saltwater mixed to the same SG. Then resume your normal RODI top off for evaporation.

Replace evaporated water over the next few days with 3.25 gallons of 35 ppt seawater and you’ll be at 35 ppt.

If you are measuring salinity daily, you mjght just top off with saltwater, most any salinity, until your tanks salinity is at your target.
