What's the deal with the wave maker pump how can it make random flow? Do I need a controller? Can it be a perfect selection for one with only one power head?

There are a zillion different wave makers. Depending on how big your tank is you might be able to get away with one. I have 4 gyres and two jebaos on my 250 tank and it stirs it up pretty good. We need more details on what size tank and what you plan on keeping to give a recommendation. Most wavemakers come with a controller these days so an external controller isn't necessary.

You can easily get away with a single pump. Tunze, ai, ecotech, jebao all make controllable pumps that would be goo for your tank. If you want more flow for sps, just add another later.

I'm wondering about pumps that don't need a controller, I don't have much money and my power strip is full

Jebao is as cheap as you get and it's just one plug for both pump and controller. Just clean it often and it'll last you a long time.
