Recently I was given a browned out encrusting montipora colony. I woke up today to find half of it bleached, I'm thinking it was rapid tissue necrosis.
What causes this? Should I be testing my water to see if theres something wrong? And will this affect any other corals?
THanks

There are several reason RTN occurs especially if its a new piece placed into your tank. Meaning if you already have SPS in your tank that's thriving and no sign of RTN i wouldn't say its your tank but a combo of things such as:
Being it was Brown already then coming from a totally different tank parameters then to yours the stress of your parameters including lighting (which are fine if you have existing SPS) could lead to RTN. RTN is a bacteria but your corals can also eject ALL its Zoo from its tissue if when introduced to a NEW environment which can also seem like RTN.
Corals that are going through RTN or STN have me dipped in Coral Rx, Lugos, or a Iodine Dip to slow down or stop the spreading then removing the bleached area (prior to dipping) is also needed.
I've saved overall more than i allowed to just die using this process, when its bacteria the success rates for been high but when its lighting its been low survival. That's my 2 cents i'm sure there are others with more knowledge and experience than me. hope it works out.

I'm going to test those as soon as a I can. I'm going through a bacteria bloom too. Do you think it could be an alk swing?

It sounds like your tank is to new to be putting SPS in, if you are going through a bacteria bloom.

I don't understand one thing. Why or where does it say RTN is bacteria? I was under the assumption it was usually due to stress. (Sorry to thread jack, I just wanted to learn more about the aforementioned subject.

I recently lost an acro the size of a volleyball in two days to Rtn...almost broke my tank down....nothing worse than RTN!

RTN in stony corals can be an infectious disease associated to the presence of Vibrio harveyi bacteria.

Bacteria associated with the rapid tissue necrosis of stony corals - Luna - 2007 - Environmental Microbiology - Wiley Online Library
+1 it can also be caused from a rapid change in lighting and high Organics. this can cause the sps to believe it doesn't need the current amount of zooxanthellae so it ejects it out ALL OF IT, so now it starts to recede due it can re-establish the correct amount fast enough so it goes into RTN. This is one reason for acclimation of (Especially) SPS are needed.
Thats the the short and sweet version

A nice way to provent this how Mr Saltwater said it about out tanks parameters: He Said " you want your tank parameter NOT to be like the fun roller coaster but like the boring one" meaning as straight and changing and balanced as possible.

Honestly to me is sounds like your tank may just be too new for SPS. In my experience it can take up to 6 months of getting a tank established enough to keep SPS.
