Receding Chalice question

I have a Watermeon Chalice that's receding. I'm pretty sure I placed it in a bad spot so I want to move it to a place with less light. my question is should I move it as is or do I need to trim off the receded edges. I'd rather not trim it if I don't have to.

Chalice is not relatively easy to take care of.
I have had many that have done this with no answer to why but chemistry of the water and available food sources

Everyone is going to ask for your water parameters. How long have you had the frags? Looks more like alkalinity shock than too much light to me.

I transferred my chalice to my(then) 4 month old tank. Took maybe a week and it started to recede. It actually started to recede in the area where the chalice was touching the new dry rock. I immediately moved it back into my old tank and has since healed. I'm going to assume that chalice corals are as finicky as SPS when it comes to the age of the aquarium.

That very well could be it. I had a problem about a month ago with an Alk swing that took out a couple other frags that I've since gotten under control but the chalice and a Setosa weren't phased by it. Maybe it's just a delayed reaction...

Those are the three most common things people say cause Chalices to Receed.

Chalices used to Receed on Me All the Time :(

But I Now Test My Alk Twice a Day and Dose Accordingly and Target Feed My Chalices 3 Times a Week.

I have never Lost a Chalice since I started doing this Over a Year Ago.

Keep Your Alkalinity Stable and Feed, Feed, Feed.

Plus they Will Grow Much Faster if you Feed Them.



I Feed 4 Different Foods to my Chalices

1. Reef Roids
2. BRS Reef Chili
3. Seachem AquaVitro Fuel (Vitamin and Ammino Acid Supplement)
4. Larry's Reef Frenzy Frozen Food (LRS)


Here is my Feeding Schedule

Tuesday -

- Reef Roids
- BRS Reef Chili
- Seachem AquaVitro Fuel (Vitamin and Ammino Acid Supplement)

I mix all 3 Together in some Tank Water and Target Feed with a Pipette.

Friday -

- Reef Roids
- BRS Reef Chili
- Seachem AquaVitro Fuel (Vitamin and Ammino Acid Supplement)

I mix all 3 Together in some Tank Water and Target Feed with a Pipette.

Sunday -

- Larry's Reef Frenzy Frozen Food (LRS)

I Target Feed with a Pitpette after Chopping it Up Fine with a Razor Blade.

That is one of the most dedicated protocols that I've seen. Very cool.

I test my alk twice weekly but that pales to twice a day. I agree with your list of causes of chalice demise and might add light intensity, some chalices prefer low light and same with flow, some chalices prefer low flow

Last time my chalice had that problem, I trimmed off the dead and decay , dipped it in solution for a few minutes , then place it in lower lighting and poof :) a week or less later, back to great health. Not that it will work for every case. But as for me it did

Do you have shrimp? I had a peppermint rip off one flesh from mine while trying to get some feather dusters attached to the plug. after almost 1/4 of it receded i moved iy to lower light (pretty much under a rock lol) and did not trim it. It has since grown back and you can't even tell now.

Mine are towards the edge of the tank furthest away from the lights and under the power head, I also,test alk twice a day and feed lrs reef frenzy and coral frenzy a LOT. They grow like crazy so I'm assuming they are happy

Hi,

Don’t mean to hijack this thread but i need some guidance to hopefully recover my receding chalice...It was doing fine a couple of weeks ago but then I noticed it starting to recede last week...my water parameters is listed below and the tank is 2 years old...

Nitrate: 0 (according to the api test kit)
Alkalinity: 8.4 (recently started adding a tbs of baking soda since I noticed it was extremely low last week 5.2-5.4)
Ph: 8.4
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Phosphate: TBD waiting on my Hanna checker but i have some GHA growing...

I feed 3 times a week with reef roid/mysis...

Have you made any recent changes? Moved a pump, changed lighting, changed dosing or water change schedule, different foods, less food, new fish? Has the chalice been moved? Do you have any shrimp or hermits?

I have a peppermint shrimp and recently replaced my protein skimmer from a cpr bakpak to a reef octopus classic 100. I just moved one of the chalice recently towards the corner of the tank (Sand bed) with lower Par versus being directly under the light...

ah were already discussing it so unless you don't get any other hits id hold off on making a new thread,
peppermint shrimp can pick at the edges of LPS hence why most shrimp have that"reef safe with caution" tag. make sure your shrimp are well fed and they should leave your corals alone!

also depending on your light set up even moving a little bit can be great par changes. If you've watched any of BRS's videos on their light testing you can see how certain lights can spotlight terribly if the light isn't mounted high enough, where moving 2 inches or so further out can be dropping 100+ par in some cases. So might be the issue, might not.
Changing the skimmer shouldn't be an issue unless you've stripped out all the nitrates/phosphates. Corals do need some to be at their healthiest.

Feed the chalice too! After lights out they usually put feeders out and they can eat. Feeding usually make em grow faster too. Or atleast with mine I believe so. Phosphates "should " be at ~0.03 and nitrates at ~10-15. Easiest way to raise it is feed more. Could also lower lighting on refugium If you have one, reduce runtime of gfo reactor, etc.

I'm quite sure the low alk is what did it. I try to keep my dKH around 7.5 to 8.0.
