A lot has happened since I last updated this thread! I got Dino’s. Actually the worst case of them I have ever seen. I had SCA confirmed by microscope. They covered absolutely everything. I tried a ton of different things to remove them. Eventually I removed all of my sand. I hate the look of bare bottom but it worked. I would baste the rocks every other day for 3 weeks after sand removal. I put some sand in a container on my sump to leave there for it to seed with some goodies before slowly adding sand back.

Eventually after Dino’s were gone some GHA started to pop up. I am still dealing with this, keeping nutrients in check, while adding some herbivores. Corals are looking amazing.

I finally skinned my stand. It took almost a year!! It took awhile to finally find something I liked. I did not want typical wood. And did not want any detail, no molding, no recessed accents or anything. I just wanted a sleek black finish. I thought about possibly doing some type of hdpe, or starboard. I finally settled on cabinet doors from IKEA. They are particle board covered in melamine. Although they are particle board underneath they should be fairly resistant to normal water spray/spills.


I had originally wanted to use magnets to hold the top part of each panel, while also utilizing a small aluminum angle on the bottom to rest on the base of my stand, holding almost all of the weight of each panel.

Using magnets is a good idea, but a little tougher to accomplish. The stand is aluminum and obviously non ferrous. I would have had to screw them to the stand, then recess the other magnets into the door panels. Or have to use some small angle bracket to attach them to the stand to still have the panel sit flush with the stand. In the end I just used some small profile basic cabinet door hardware. The things that kept your 1980’s kitchen cabinets closed. They work well and don’t take up much real estate. I ordered 6- 1” aluminum angle iron from Amazon for $15 and spray painted them black. I had to cut down the panels so I also used some iron on melamine strips to protect the exposed mdf from the cut.

Update: I still have not added the fan I bought to my stand. Just pure laziness. I also bought some material for a canopy, it should arrive this week.

I am dealing with some GHA, did a micro dose of flucanazol we will see

I am still battling GHA, other than that things are looking good. Tank is packed with frags. 50+ SPS frags.

I went ahead and purchased my backup plan for power loss. I bought a Honda 2200w portable generator. It can easily run the entire tank including lights and constant heater usage, plus my fridge.

I also bought a small Lithium ion battery backup for one of my MP40’s. I watched a Reef Dork YouTube video on it and purchased one. It cost me $65. It should easily run the MP40 for 10-20 hours, enough time to start the generator.

My alk consumption isn’t too much. At the moment I am dosing 30mls of two part daily. I have had the calcium reactor running for about a month without the C02. I just bought a ten pound canister and will switch to the reactor this weekend.

Yes, the small battery backup was a no brainer. Short money and will buy me some time to run the generator. One day soon I will test how long it runs one MP40

Update. So I am still battling GHA. I tried a micro dose of flucanazol and it did not work. I don’t want to try a higher dose. So I ordered a large $600 CUC. Over 175 snails, emerald crabs, two different urchins, and two Dollabella Sea Hares. We will see what happens!!

I just bought this same one for 800, on top of a backup battery that I have my return pump and mp40 on. Great little machine, and its a Honda.
