RED MANTIS SHRIMP APPEARED

It took me 1.5 years to catch and remove a green one from my 150. It killed all crabs, small snails, pepermint shrimp, and slowly started killing larger snails.
I have had one in my 50 for 1.5 years also and it smashes snails for dinner. Still cant catch it.
I put one about 1" or smaller into my 13. It came on 35lbs of live rock from my last order.
When I catch the one in my 50 I will rehome it if it survives the catch, lol.

It’s quite small now, and nearly impossible to find but I plan on removing it should it start to become a problem.

From what I am reading seems like the red mantis from Florida don’t get as large, but will see how it goes for now.

Have you glued the rocks? Maybe try to lure it out with krill? Tongs in one hand, phone in the other. Even if I just get to see the color and claws, it will work for a rough id

Yes, the rocks I saw it run to are glued. Of course it’s living in the largest rock structure in the tank. It’s movable but that will be a pain in my butt to deal with

A mantis trap may work but it would not go in it. Eventually started feeding it with a hemostat and was able to snag it but it did not survive.
This is worth a shot as it will catch snails, and whelks you may not want in your system.

TBS suggested a trap using a plastic water bottle with the top cut off and inverted back into the bottle. Weigh it down and place a frozen clam inside and set it after dark. Now, I’ve tried this numerous times in various locations in the tank and all I ever caught was my hapless peppermint shrimp. I also tried a smooth, narrow juice glass with the clam and saran on top with a 1” slit in it for easy ingress but tricky egress. Place it at about 45 degree angle against rocks so leaving it is slippery. This is more for crabs, but I gave it a try. Didn’t work either.

I love it. Depending on your set up, just putting it in the sump can be a good home for it.

I kept a red one , it stayed at about 3 inches long and didn’t bother anything. Found his cave and he got daily feedings of mysis

Took a while…have been trying to trap him on and off for a couple of months, but finally got him.

Saw him poking out of the rocks this morning so dropped a bottle trap with a frozen shrimp in the tank and he couldn’t resist.

Sat here drinking my coffee for 20 minutes watching him work up the nerve to sneak into the trap for a bite to eat and he finally did.

Anyone in the Orlando area interested in a Red Mantis Shrimp?
