Just a bit if a public service announcement really, today the sensor probe for the water level on my Red Sea ATO+ failed. The app simply displayed "Error" next to the water level section (other sensor probes seem fine, such as temp, and over fill). The day before it failed, it started doing very small top-ups (around 0.01-0.06ltr) every hour. Thankfully, the pump and everything else still works, so I can simply trigger a top-up manually a couple of times a day.

Red Sea support have said they will send me a new sensor, as it was only bought on October 2023. Now, this may be total coincidence, but on May 16th, Red Sea sent out an email, titled "ReefATO+ preventive maintenance" stating:

"It has come to our attention that in some aquarium systems, the titanium pins of the ReefATO+ level sensor can slowly build up a calcium carbonate or organic coating that can affect their sensitivity. To keep the ReefATO+ sensor at its optimum performance we recommend you do preventative maintenance of the sensor every 3 months to remove any such coatings. This is done easily by soaking the sensor in a weak acid solution (such as regular vinegar) for approximately 20 minutes and rinsing well before returning it to the system. If necessary, you can use a soft brush to remove any stubborn deposits."

So, just on Monday past, I cleaned my sensor with a weak solution of citric acid as it had kinda stopped consistently topping up, so I figured, I must have calcium buildup like the email said. After the cleaning, it went back to it's normal filling routine, and all seemed well... But then 4 days later, it failed. Like I say, it could be total coincidence, as I told Red Sea all of this information, and they still said they'll send me a replacement, and never said anything about the cleaning approach.

Perhaps I've just been unlucky, but this is my first equipment failure on a <1 year old system, and I know that it's a case of when rather than if, with failures; just didn't expect it to happen so soon. Hopefully the newer models have had any underlying issues addressed, but thought I'd share for anyone thinking about getting one; maybe others have reported the same issue, but I'll leave that for you to search for :)

I would add that up until this week, I wouldn't have had a single complaint about the ATO+, it's been great otherwise; and I can still lazily top up from a button press in the app until the new sensor comes. very much a first world problem!

Update!

The sensor has now completely failed, and as a result, I can no longer operate the pump manually via the app, as it appears to need an active sensor to function.

Had to empty my RO reservoir, and top up by hand with a jug a couple of times a day. Hopefully the new sensor comes this week.

Jumping on this thread as I have the same issue. Did you get your new sensor?

I can't help but wonder if the latest firmware update caused this. The timing of your issue and mine right around a firmware update feels like too much of a coindence.

Either way, I currently don't have a functioning ATO which is a big problem.

I had the exact same issue, sensor failed after maybe 8 months of use. The real kicker for me was that I had bought it from my local LFS and can't figure out where I'd put the paper receipt from the purchase... and Red Sea won't warranty anything without providing proof of purchase. I wish they had some mechanism to see that the serial number of the device went live in reefbeat on X date and use that for warranty. That policy really makes buying locally or giving their products as a gift something I'd reconsider. I had to buy a new sensor and everything is working again for the time being.

I had the same issue just this week, 9 months after purchase! RedSea is sending me a new sensor, and they told me that the new model is "improved". For me I got an error that the pump ran for too long so it was stopped, event though the RO reservoir was full and the sensor was fully submerged. In the app the level keeps showing below sensor, even when the sensor is submerged. Good thing the pump didn't keep running and flooded my cabinet!

They sent me a new sensor yeah, and all works well again. Sorry for the late reply!

Be ready to repeat this process every time a sensor needs cleaning.
Even cleaning it with RO water and your fingers breaks it.
I'm on my 6th sensor and it just died...

These sensors are useless.

Same here, only my RS ATO+was from February of 2024. Water level read below despite being high and the pump timed-out. Citric acid soak - about 15 min, scrub and scrape any spirorbids, etc. Lasted about four hours until the water level again read "below" and too much water was added.

Well mine is starting to fail and the website won’t let me post a warranty issue.

It says I am missing required field but all are filled in.

Any secret to getting them to warranty a part?

Went from phone to computer, went back in a clicked in each field versus "Tab" between them and then hit "Send" a few dozen times, it finally went through.

RedSea customer support has always actually been really great yet they do follow the protocol a bit strictly. Make sure to upload/ add the receipt or PO.

Mine stopped this week, opened and was leaking. The icp showed copper and I didn't know where it was from. Redsea has already given me a warranty and is sending me another one, even though I imported and bought from a seller on Aliexpress and there was no note. Redsea is giving me another one through the importer in Brazil

They didn’t even ask me to do anything. Just asked for my receipt and address.
I had attached the receipt and address to the request.

Great customer service. I asked for a discount card or RedSea bucks and they have none to give out.

Oh well. I really like the look of RedSea but will quickly change if this continues.

Mine just failed as well. I believe it failed while filling and luckily my reservoir was low on water and it filled my system to the very edge of the glass. I got extremely lucky. I ran into another issue where my supply line was accidentally left off and the tank needed filled and it just kept pumping water all over the floor. 4 gallons of water… I thought there was a feature built in that would shut the system off after so much water was dispensed out of the normal filling?

My understanding is it is supposed to learn how much it normally dispenses and then runs based on that.
Having said that, I would say it isn’t working correctly.

How much do you normally dispense at one time?

Mine is .13-.16 gallons per, I almost want to test it and see if it actually works now.

I have a 43g DT and have about 4 gallons of space in my sump.

My ato reservoir holds 5 gallons.
Purely luck it worked out that way. So I figure if it overfills it will stay in the sump as long as it doesn’t do it when I refill.

Red Sea is lacking in QC from what I can tell.

Anyone having issues with their ATO autofill button turning off?

I woke up to a noise in my sump. Thought it was my skimmer.
Nope.

I use a small cheap power head to make flow for my Chaeto. It was just out of the water.

I checked my ATO and it was off.

Turned it on and alll is well.

Thanks for posting this. My ATO water meter failed today. A soak in vinegar and scrub with a brush did the trick.

Also, you're not alone on issues with a <1yr system. I have two of the 4 head dosing units. Each fails every day. I had to buy two Kasa switches that turn them off for I've minutes every night to force a restart to ensure they work every morning. I also have a Reefmat 500 that occasionally empties an entire roll of mat within a few hours.

i just got a temperature sensor failure error on my ATO.. coincidentally last week i recently had to delete the device from reefbeat and the re add it after replacing my router and couldn’t get it to reconnect even though i used same SSID and password. after installing , i was getting lo water reading even though the sump level was fine. i pulled the sensor out of the bracket, rubbed it, put it back and it seemed fine. now this temperature failure happened. do you think i did this?
s3nt mail to support just saying i got the failure after resetting the device. ( didn’t mention the rubbing😇)
