Okay, as promised I have mixed up a batch of this New Formula Red Sea Blue Bucket Salt and the results are below.
I prepared 14 litres of Salt water following the procedure set forth at the bottom of the page at the following URL.
Salt was rolled around to mix up as much as possible.
Add 13.5 litres of RODI water to the mixing vessel.
Water TDS was measured at 0 ppm.
The water temperature was 22 degrees C as that is ambient temp here at the moment.
Added 534.8 g of Salt as stated at the link above (however I expected that this would be incorrect as it appears the page has not been updated to reflect the ‘New Formula’)
Mixed for 20 mins.
At this point the solids had completely dissolved as stated in the salt specification.
Added RODI water to achieve a volume of 14 litres and temperature raised to 25 Celcius
pH was measured at 8.21 (Calibrated Milwaukee MW102)
Salinity was measured to be 31.5 psu using a calibrated Hanna HI 98319 Conductivity Meter and crosschecked with a calibrated Milwaukee MA887
Added additional 29.4g salt (product spec says 4.3 gr/l which would be 564.1g)
Mixed 10 mins
Salinity was measured to be 33.1 psu
Added additional 40g salt (total 604.2g) and mixed another 10 mins.
Salinity was measured to be 35.1psu
At this point I had used 604g salt for a total volume just a tad over 14 litres of water @ 35.1 psu.
So you require 43.1 gr/l of salt to obtain 35 psu compared to advertised 40.3 gr/l
Tested results at this salinity:
Alkalinity:
Hanna HI772 8.8 dkh
Salifert 8.8 dkh (0.43ml)
0.1N HCl Titration 8.7dkh
Calcium:
Hanna HI758 424 ppm
Red Sea Pro 430-440 ppm
Magnesium:
Red Sea Pro 1280-1320 ppm
Nitrate:
Hanna HI782 0.0 ppm
Phosphate:
Hanna HI774 0.01ppm
Total Ammonia:
Red Sea Pro 0.0 ppm
So, this appears to be a good salt. It leaves no residue in my mixing vessel and was completely dissolved in under 30 minutes as stated.
Most chemistry appears to be within spec according to hobby grade tests.
Alk is higher than specified and slightly more salt is required than advertised.
