Morning from central canada everyone ☕

So I'm getting ready to order a rsr 300 in the coming weeks and am faced with the return pump decision.

looking for something somewhat budget friendly because I still need to buy the tank.

I mistakenly confused the new (not for sale yet) reef run g2 pumps from videos for the current model and thought the pumps came with a cheap controller to control flow. So while I was just sipping coffee googled red sea pumps and saw it was on sale for $70 cad. Off. (The 5500 model)

Well I quickly figured out the current or old model appears to not have ANY kind of control without the seperate $270cad. Controller. Is this right? Would it just run at 100% with no way to control flow at all?

I came to terms with my mistake, but deep down I much prefer things to match, and since the new rsr tanks come with an ato with a similar looking controller i thought what the heck, I'll just order the controller later when I'm ready to start cycling. Then of course I'd need to order a matching rsr skimmer and I'm aware this is how company's "get ya"

From past tanks I'm used to some humming from canister filters and such, so the reported noise complaints aren't super alarming to me as long as it's not like rocks in a tumbler.

will a red sea reefer 300 be able to handle this pump at 100% just for cycling while I wait to get the controller?

Anybody have feed back on these pumps? I've searched the forum and it doesn't seem like there's many reviews out there.

It is my understanding that it works without the control box as well, but without the control box it'll work only through the app.

Edit, from the RS website for the G1 models:
Can I use the pump without the controller? No, the pump must be connected to the controller. Connecting the pump directly to Red Sea's power supply will run the pump in a “test” state at 35%-50% intensity, depending on the model.

The G2 models work independently, you can read their FAQ online on how to make that work:
