Red Sea Reefer 350 Filter between baffles.

The sponge material?
I use it to keep the pump clean. I clean it if my phosphates are getting too high or every few months.

Google course aquarium sponge/foam. You can also get the stock Red Sea sponge.
Red Sea Reefer 350 & 450 Replacement Bubble Trap Sponge Part # 42186

I got tired of having to clean it, so I removed it and never looked back. Plus, I think, it helped with the water level. The stock valve is already bad enough.

I’ve never had a problem with the valve, and I bought the tank used! I consider myself really lucky.

Good idea!

How did you keep it quiet? Sounds like I have a waterfall in my living room when I take out the sponge.

It's the first thing in ditch. I have no problem with micro bubbles.
@ctopherl Noise is kept low by having the sump water level high enough that the water doesn't fall far. Reefer 300 and 170 and a 125g diy sump all with no sponge. I left it in my new water box but the tank isn't stocked yet and I'll pull it when it gets dirty.
