Hey fellow reefers !! So I know theyr leaky sob but has anyone ever resealed a g1 tank ?? Online they don't take tanks apart . You just have to spend hrs cleaning off the silicone fully fully and then seal it . It doesn't seem hard but is it successful ??? I might sounds stupid but Im definitely considering it and if I couldn't do it myself I would hire somebody capable . What do you think and if youv done it got any tips for a guy :D I'd really appreciate the advise

Yes, people have had success re-sealing tanks. make sure to use a good cleaner like alcohol or I've also seen people use mineral spirits to remove all the oil from the glass before you apply the silicone. Make sure you fully wipe off the mineral spirits if you go that route. You also need to allow time for the silicone to fully cure. Each siliconemanufacturer has different recommendations for cure time which can take several weeks but usually around 2 weeks. Clamps and straps will be needed to keep everything together perfectly.

Ya I was gonna use alcohol i got good 99.9999 stuff and give it extra cure time . Also clean the seams several times to ensure it's absolutely cleaned . Thanx for replying everyone hates and for good reason but it doesn't seem that hard to reseal just more of a serious Hassel with a running tank and the mess/damage it would make but better safe then sorry

If you’re referring to the silicone inside the tank, which is squished out of each seam during tank assembly then wiped; this isn’t going to do much of anything for you on a rimless tank…

The actual important structural silicone is the thin film in the seam between each of the glass panes…

basically, the tank needs to either be fully rebuilt from glass panes, or fully reinforced with glass at every seam to get any appreciable benefit from adding more silicone to a Reefer tank…

Yeah looks easy enough. This youtuber has some great videos on how to build tanks and seal them.

Clamps and straps are NEVER used to hold an aquarium together during assembly… maybe a few pieces of tape at most…

Ya the videos I watched which were not reefers they don't use anything ... Tape it tho hey .. that's a good call I got some gorilla tape proabably tape before I remove the old silicone. There are different approaches to the same problem. Have seen corner clamps used and a strap. I have also seen tape used.

Straps or clamps would inherently clamp the panes together so tightly that an excess of silicone is extruded from each structural joint…

This would leave a razor thin membrane of silicone in each structural seam… silicone has a finite limit to how much it can expand or contract before it starts tearing…. such a thin silicone cross-section will inevitably peel away from the glass over time as temperature changes, and hydrostatic load is applied…

Silicone seam thickness is a carefully monitored metric among tank builders; what you’re recommending doing leads to what is referred to as a “starved” seam/joint…

This said, don’t believe everything you see on YouTube…

I would recommend against gorilla tape, you want something that leaves clean lines, no adhesive, and is easy to pull! (I typically use frog tape, or Scotch “delicate surfaces” tape for general glass reinforcement work)

Thank you kindly ... I was honestly nervous seeing the people on YouTube use nothing . Then I read that you have to take the panels apart ... But nowhere did I see that .. and like youv said it's very serious and damaging to have the job fail .. frog tape it is just to give it a hold . I gotcha the g1 has front curved glass too right and has rim so I totally wasn't thinking or believing to take the thing apart and I'm gonna read what ya sent 1000 percent cuz you can never know enough or it all
Or anything in my case totally first time diy ... I originally said nah but it's been on my mind constantly.. nobody talks about resealing them so that kinda was on my mind too I'll post a picture :D I have too !!!

Ah! So this is a Max series, which predates the Reefer series if memory serves correct!

These have a much lower reported failure rate than the Reefer line of Red Sea tanks, though I have noticed a recent uptick in failure reports, indicating the potential looming end of natural lifespan for The Max series…

IAM not to sure as IAM not the original buyer but it's got the curved front edges and the hood it's pretty nice . IAM gonna give it the best job and have a good backup using it as a quarantine in the meantime right

So your saying a breakdown . Total disassembly... Hmmm and then still use frog tape to hold it together ? I know nothing about this which is why I'm asking but if I take it apart id think I'd have to use some straps or giant clamps .... And I dunno if that's something I'm qualified for ... But this tank isn't rimless bro its got top and bottom a hood and the front is curved glass... I seen it . It's in the basement of my lfs
It didn't leak when it got there 6 or 7 years ago but the place down there is dusty as **** and there's a bad mice problem like I couldn't even bring my puppy inside just a couple months ago cuz they put poison everywhere for the problem .....

I know nothing about this which is why I'm asking but if I take it apart id think I'd have to use some straps or giant clamps .... And I dunno if that's something I'm qualified for ... But this tank isn't rimless bro its got top and bottom a hood and the front is curved glass... I seen it . It's in the basement of my lfs

Fish nerd who's the employee actually thinks I don't have to teardown just so a 1000% cleanup and giver . Your the first person to say it and it's a bit of a bigger job . But I don't wanna fuk around if I have to tear down I honestly might pay a person or better a professional so there isn't any drama

So you’re thinking of purchasing this tank? I would personally recommend looking at other options if so! Any form of work which appreciably strengthens this tank will be multiple hundreds of dollars at minimum unless done yourself!

I mean it's not some town but to my knowledge there isn't a person here who can professionally reseal this tank . So id have to drive it 2.5hrs to somebody unknown there. But there would be a somebody there who is qualified that id pay . I wouldn't wanna pay just anyone right

Well, again, laying a new interior silicone bead (“resealing”) isn’t going to do much for tank strength!

Finding someone to disassemble and reassemble (rebuild) is going to be tough; not many people are both skilled enough, and in low enough demand to rebuild used tanks!
