RedSea Nano 20g

Hello friends!

I’m based in the UK and thinking about purchasing a RedSea Nano 20g (second hand).

I’ve done a lot of research and I know that RedSea have some issues, but the tank I’ve bought seems in really good condition and the guy I’ve bought if off had a genuine reason for selling it. I’ve checked out the seams and everything seems in good condition

There’s one thing I can’t get my head around and I’d love to hear your thoughts about it…

The tank has been broken down since August this year, but included in the sale is the aquascape. This aquascape looked amazing and I’d have it in the tank in a heartbeat..

But… is it worth just buying new sand and rock to avoid any nasty surprises down the line? I’m new to this hobby, so I’d rather invest a little more money upfront and buy new rock.. as opposed to having a load of issues down the line?

I’d love your expert views on this :)

Personally I would suggest that you clean the aquascape with bleach water, the bleach will melt away any old organics on the rocks and put it back to "new" state. Any new dry rock you buy is just old rock that has been bleached. 4 or 5 days in bleach water with a powerhead, then a few days more in rodi water to rinse them off well.

You can also re-use the sand, but it needs to be thoroughly cleaned. You put the sand in a bucket add water, stir it up, and empty the dirty water. you keep going until the water runs clear when you stir it up. its a big job and takes hours, usually easier to just buy new sand.

agree with above, if it's already been sitting dry, and you bleach sterilize it, you are good to reuse it.
