Is there a difference between the Reefer 170 G2 and G2+ or they the same?

Looking at a used 170 reefer that is listed a a G2 but wondering if this is the same as G2+

Before you buy a Red Sea tank, make sure to read the very long thread about seam failures on those. People have ruined their floors and lost thousands of dollars because of it.

I went to my LFS recently and the owner told me he sold 9 Red Sea tank last year and all 9 of them leaked. Their customer service is atrocious, which makes it even worse. This store no longer carries any Red Sea products.

At least from a good amount of hobbyist experiences that are local to me (not counting online people on this/other forums) I wouldn't use any new red sea tank indoors even if you paid me 50 dollars per gallon let alone a used one.

Stick with a braced aquarium if used (very carefully checked) or buy a new one from a company that has a good reputation/custom order one in general.

If it helps you imagine the potential damage, fill up a 5 gallon bucket and dump it on the floor outside to see how much ground a mere 5 gallons can cover.

You could not pay me enough money to use any Red Sea tank - Old or New.

You will end losing a fortune when it busts open, and floods your house and everything in the tank dies.

Just Say No.

Wow I didnt know it was this much of a problem... If everyones tanked leaked, they would be out of business? Maybe its like 2%? 5?

No it’s likely more common than that. It’s been discovered their silicone is cheap and causes seam busts. The G2’s likely improved a little over the g1 but it’s common enough to avoid them. Honestly I’d look at the water box 60ex or 60x. It’s a comparable size/design to the Red Sea 170 but nowhere near the amount of failures. I just went through all of this as I’m setting up a similar sized tank. I’ll be going with the UNS R60. Way more features, 5 year warranty, and superior build quality to Red Sea in every way. Also, the Red Sea gate valve is trash. I compared the Red Sea 170 to the UNS r60 in person and there isn’t any amount of a deal that could convince me to go with Red Sea. My wife hates my hobby as it is and a seam bust would end me lol

Okay well good thing I posted here.> I guess I'm not going with that used Reefer 170...

I just looked at waterbox X 60.2 and that is reasonably priced.. The UNS looks sick but its more expensive.. The cabinet looks jammed packed too.

I like the IM AIO 45 model but they want $300 for shipping, yikes.

I ordered the Waterbox X 60.2.. . UNS R60 looks real nice but waterbox was on sale at BRS and its free shipping. Big price difference. Hope I made the right choice!

Not everyone's tank leaked.

BUT, do you want to worry about it for a good deal? Get a used Cade, Innovative Marine, Waterbox, etc. They are also all good deals used, and very few seam failure threads.

I believe the only difference is an added red Sea ATO system

Great choice. Can’t go wrong with either. Easy to ikea a controller cabinet for the waterbox as the cabinet goes with just about anything. Yeah the UNS is more feature rich but at the end of the day I think you’ll be really happy with the waterbox. Keep us updated!

The + model just includes the Red Sea ATO.

I’ve had a Gen 2 Reefer 625 for almost 2.5 years. No problems. Love the system. Would recommend it to anyone.

But I’ve also read plenty of horror stories. Mostly on the Gen 1s. Your mileage may vary.
