Redundant Duel Return Pumps w/ Only One Return Outlet

I recently got a water box Marine 110 and there is only one Return Outlet but I'm wondering how I could run dual return pumps and wondering what people have done to make that work

Are you wanting second pump for backup or more volume output?

Yes, you can run two pumps into one discharge line. However, each pump output requires a check valve, which is an additional failure point.

Just wanted to have one ready as a backup
 
I think getting a back up pump is a good idea but not using them together. You can swap them out during maintenance or just have one as a backup just in case. Diameter of your return line is also a concern trying to run both at once.

Okay that makes sense I just was worried about it failing being gone or something like that

As a marine engineer, in critical applications, we sized 3 pumps so that one pump could keep up with most of the workload but ran 2 pumps into one discharge line when max flow was required. The third pump was a backup with each pump having an isolation valve on input & output and each pump having a check valve on pump discharge.

Personally, I design my reef aquarium systems with one return pump with attention to detail on how much water drains from display into the sump in the event of a power failure. I also design in a separate source of circulation in display tank and remember a syphon break on sump return line at display tank
