Reef Exhaustion?

What!!!! I find that hard to believe! You are a likeable dude! I haven't made but 1 entire friend here if it makes u feel better. And they actually turned into a friend, not just common names I see a lot. They PMd me and we have been chatting since. About their reefs and family life. I guess its whoever you connect with.

I dont leave my stupid house or my room really. I dont talk on the phone. But I message like a mad woman.

Take a chance, get to know someone. Its nice to have a friend with a like hobby.

So far I haven't gotten reef exhaustion. I don't really test, dose or worry about pests. They seem to disappear on their own and I collect from the ocean. I very rarely get a fish death as they only die of old age or occasionally jumping out.

I don't have to quarantine or medicate anything so I don't need all that equipment and extra tanks but I do now have a huge hair algae issue. I didn't say problem because although it did kill a few corals, it is natural and will leave on it's own as it always has in the past 50 years.

My tank is just there and except for feeding and cleaning the glass, I do very little.

I do only have one tank but in the past I had 14. Some were for raising fry, local critters, experiments etc.

If it stresses me or I worry about it, there is a large dumpster 50 yards from my house. :)

The VA tells me I have PTSD. I'm not sure if reefing makes it better or worse. :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

Thats stinking hilarious!! 50 years is a long butt time. I guess you have had it u der control for sometime. I have fizzled out testing, may 1x a month. I watch my corals and use a dip to keep track of nitrates just to be sure.

Maybe I drive myself nuts. I hate algae so much. Im like, how do these reefers have immaculate tanks. The glass algae is a nuisance. And I cant stand to see it. The only tank I have not been getting any diatoms in, is my octopus tank. And I have idea why it never got any. Maybe from the plants I put in early on?

I had multiple tanks for a while. It gets to be too much after a while. I have other hobbies so I don't want to be tied down to taking care of aquariums all the time. Now I have one reef tank and one freshwater. I spend maybe 3 or 4 hours a week with maintenance now.

Well your tank will always grow a film of algae. That is natural and normal and if it didn't, then there would be something wrong.

Sometimes I feel like it is taboo to talk about burn out but it is real. I think of talk I did with Than where he said “ I’ve been an avid reefer for decades but that hasn’t always meant that I had a personal tank.” That was the permission to breath that I needed.

I would now tell you stepping away is what recharges the battery’s so you can take the next leap :)

Instead of taking a tank down, I built a small 2.5 gallon tank for my baby seahorses. I found 9 in the tank today. Got them transferred.

Do you ever get reef exhaustion? The attitude- If it can go wrong, it will go wrong. How do you get motivated again?

Between the algae build up, dead fish, coral death, testing, pests etc...how the heck do you stay motivated?

Of course I do have 4 salt tanks. But its exhausting. Sometimes I want to throw them all out.

At 76 years old and a reef addict for 55 years, I have learned to be a “Laissez faire” reefer. I find Peace not Stress in my hobby. Cleaning glass is not a high priority. In my living/dining area, I have 6 marine tanks: 120G & 75G each with cryptic refugiums and two 55G macro algae grow out tanks.

A spare bedroom is fish room with 6 small grow tanks and 150G Rubbermaid tub used for designer live rock cultivation.
