Im thinking of doing a 20 gallon reef only aquarium with different snails as a CUC.

Should I put a skimmer in there? Or is it possible to do reef only with a big ol HOB filter with chemipure/filterfloss? (thats what I have in my 10 gal)

Any opinions/notations would be appreciated!
It will be a primarily LPS tank-if that makes a difference

Skimmers help but you don't necessarily need one. A HOB will certainly work you'll just have to pay attention to the floss to be sure it stays unclogged and that you keep the snails off the intake tube. Other then that since its LPS and can handle a more nutrients in the water have at it!

Is the HOB filter interest there because it's a heck of a lot cheaper then a HOB skimmer? If so I understand. If that's not the case why not just run a smaller HOB filter and eventually add a HOB skimmer. Guess what I'm saying is don't have your heart set on just one thing keep your mind open.

its not so much the cost as it is not being able to find an HOB skimmer thats worth a crap. I wont have a sump or AIO, its just a regular 20 gallon aquarium.

I gotta agree with you on the HOB skimmer. But ya just a HOB filter will work! Nothing wrong with a HOB filter. Ever thought about drilling the tank for a sump or don't have the room for a sump?
