AWC Setup Starting Today

Received both containers the other day and I am going to setup the plumbing while a fresh batch of saltwater is mixing.

Neptune Systems DOS is scheduled to arrive later today.

Setup Done!

I managed to finish setup and calibrated DOS today but have not turned it on for AWC. On average I used about 20 feet of tubing for each pump. I still have a few more logistic questions to answer first before I let it go auto.

Will be looking to do a few runs within the next few days.

A few pics of the process.

I hope so too. Now that I have stared at it a few days, I am now more comfortable how this could work. I am looking to have this automatically start going this evening now that fresh batch of saltwater is ready.

AWC is finally on auto mode as of yesterday evening. It's currently setup for 5 gallons a week which comes to 2704 mL a day of waste water out and fresh saltwater in. The only addition is labeling things so it would be easier to know what goes where later (i.e. tubing).

Summary of the setup:

Painful Lesson

Below is a pic of healthy ultra red tabling acropora that was growing right next to a slimer acropora. I had noticed for a few days that one of the tip on the red tabling was turning white and knew it was it may be because both were getting too close.
IMG_20190623_001454.jpg

So i figured I move the slimer to a lower location. Somehow in the process of pulling out the slimer acro by hand, the following day the red tabling acro was completely gone.

Below is the result that has been sitting like this for days. Slimer acropora is fine. Red tabling acropora is gone! So frustrating...

Lesson - be careful when removing coral as it can greatly impact it's neighbor

Feeding Vid

I had been meaning to shoot a video of this a while now. It's nothing special besides feeding a bunch of little Greenbanded Goby. There are about 7-8 of these little critters I had in the tank since the beginning and I just like the frenzy that goes on when I start feeding them. Just fun to watch all the movements near the middle and bottom of the tank as they run back and forth during feeding time. As a community fish, they are pretty neat to watch.

Going in for snails...

I went to the LFS hoping to get a few snails for clean up yesterday. As usual I walked out without any snails and instead two frags I did not have room for or need . One is JasonFox Walt Disney acro and the other is simple green acro which I thought was yellow under the LFS lighting. Hoping i have the right stuff to keep the color on the Walt Disney going. Been wondering what is so special about one of these for some time.

Two months update...

The past couple of months have been ups and downs.
  • On the up side, most of the corals have shown clear signs of growth. I can see it in their size alone.
  • I started testing UV settings on the Kessil and have noticed slight color changes in a few of the montiporas

  • On the down side, my RO filter was over due for replacement and look to have helped algae growth. Weeks before I had slow brown algae outbreak. That has been fixed and algae has receded back to normal.
  • 2nd - some corals are dying due to STN. Here is a shot of a few corals which has shown sign of STN. Those white areas used to have coral tissues growing. I believe it's due to stability of ALK mostly. I had a few instances ALK would go from 7ish to 9ish and only caught the low ALK after tissue started to recede. Probably does not help with so many acros in such a small space. I am hoping to keep ALK stable between 8-9 and not past 9 since my water change does not contain ALK beyond 8.

I really dig the success you’ve had with this tank. Great job!

Thank you. I have enjoyed watching this mature nicely even though it's still relatively new.

As you know, space is limited here. With many growing acros and limited space is a good problem to have with this tank.

This Nuvo is on a different level.

The thank is coming up on it's first year at the end of October when I first started cycling it. My first SPS dominate tank and is definitely a learning experience on a nano. The game plan now is just to keep stable as possible. Just amazing how sensitive some of the SPS are.

That's kind of where I'm at. Just looking at stability. Are you going to reduce WC in the future ?

I plan the keep the weekly water change routine going. I have the automated water change off since setup. I am trying to dial it in but has been too busy to mess with it. That should keep things relatively stable once it's going. I am hoping to have it back on after my business trip

Looks awesome man. Sorry I haven't been posting regularly since they shut down the app, i am forgetful and without the notifications I end up with out of sight out of mid syndrome. Again looking great definitely better than mine. I am slowly getting mine back to healthy but my sps after the issues i've had are barely hanging on, lost one of my zoas and another has lost several polyps but i still have the colony, and yet other zoas and my purple death palys are spreading.

Understandable...it's call having a life ;) .

Getting close to a year. The goal is to just maintain stability for the next 3-6 months. This STN looks to be a bit of problem so I have to figure it out.
