Reefing Beginner

Hi all,

My wife sent me an instagram reel with a xenia coral which I thought looked so cool and began my quick obsession with reefing haha. I've got the Innovative Marine 40L AIO ordered and it's set to ship in late August which seems so far away but has given me a lot of time to research and understand this complex but rewarding hobby. Excited to be part of the community and go through all the ups and downs :D

I'd suggested deciding now if you want to start your tank with real, wet live rock from a good fish store or from an aquaculture facility like Tampa Bay Saltwater, or if you'll be using dry rock. Live rock is my preferred way, I believe the benefits outweigh the cost and potential downsides. But, most people opt for using dry base rock to start with. If you use dry rock, take the time now to get your rocks cycling in something like a Brute trashcan while you're waiting for your tank to be delivered. This way, you get a jump start on getting the rocks cycled and maturing, and you'll be that much better off when your tank comes in

I plan to do a mix of mostly dry rock ~25lbs and the 8lbs of the TBS Base Rock. That seems to give me the flexibility with aquascaping and getting the benefits of live rock. What do you think?

Just don't put a Xenia on your main rock or your whole tank will be overtaken same goes for green star polyp, mushrooms, and a few zoanthids.
