Hello Everyone! My name is McKenna and I am new to the hobby but have been OBSESSED with coral since I was a kid. I am a first time reef tank owner and my LFS told me a nano 4 gallon was the best place to start 🤄 It has definetly been a learning curve to be sure. I've made alot of mistakes along the way but I'd like to start a thread detailing my expirence and the things I have tried. I am going to do summaries of each month since I began the tank in Feb 2026. I will be adding pictures I took around each step and keep you all updated as it grows. I'm currently a Conservation Biology & Ecology student at Arizona State University with a passion for coral reefs and marine invertebrates. This little nano reef isn't just a hobby for me—it's become an extension of my education, allowing me to apply what I'm learning in the classroom to a living ecosystem at home. My long-term goal is to pursue a master's degree focused on coral reef ecology, conservation, and restoration, with a special interest in corals and nudibranchs. I hope this tank continues to grow alongside my knowledge and eventually becomes just the first of many reef systems I'll use to support conservation, research, and education. Wish me luck. And may all your corals grow healthy, bright and beautiful!
Thanks,
McKenna 🫧🪸🐚

  • Started my first saltwater reef aquarium (4 gallons AIO from LFS).
  • Began cycling with live rock and sand.

  • Equipment:
    • Live rock
    • Live sand
    • Rear filtration with bioballs
    • Refugium chamber
    • Heater
    • Thermometer
  • March

    • Completed the nitrogen cycle.
    • Added macroalgae to the refugium.
    • Began monitoring:
      • Salinity
      • pH
      • Ammonia
      • Nitrite
      • Nitrate
    • Added first corals:
      • Eagle Eye Zoanthid
      • Xenia from brother's 40g (they were not healthy, but I didn't know)
      • Utter Chaos Paly

  • Entered the ugly stage.
  • Experienced:
    • Brown diatoms
    • Film algae
  • Learned not to overreact and let the tank mature naturally.
  • Began regular maintenance and water testing.
  • Added first inhabitants
  • Green Banded Goby
  • Cerith Snail
  • 3 Sexy Shrimp
  • Zoas began to thrive.

First major setback

  • Green-banded goby died unexpectedly.
  • Experienced:
    • Ammonia spike
    • Nitrite spike
    • Nitrates climbed to ~80 ppm.
  • Performed multiple water changes.
  • Cleaned refugium and sand bed.
  • Focused on stabilizing the biological filter instead of making drastic changes.

  • Aiptasia Outbreak

    • Discovered several Aiptasia growing among my palys from different LFS (I can't catch a break).
    • Initially attempted to smother them with coral glue.
    • Added a peppermint shrimp.
    • Peppermint shrimp successfully eliminated the entire outbreak.

  • Unfortunately, the peppermint shrimp passed away about a week later after completing its "mission."

  • Tank Maturation

    • Began seeing pink coralline algae growing on:
      • Rockwork
      • Frag plugs
      • Snail shells
    • Zoanthids began producing new polyps.
    • Added More Cleanup Crew

      • Blue-legged dwarf hermit crab (My son loving named Snoodle šŸ¦€)
      • Mystery snail
      • Cerith snail
June 24th:

My Dream Animals Finally Came Home...

Three Lettuce Sea Slugs (Elysia crispata) šŸ„¬šŸ’ššŸ„¬

I've already fallen in love with them.

One is:

  • Bright green
  • Super ruffled
  • "The most lettucy"

The tiny one is darker green.

The largest one is a lighter green.

Seeing them all sleeping together at the top of the glass might be the cutest thing I've ever seen in this hobby.

Refugium

Added:

  • Chaetomorpha macroalgae
  • Hair algae (courtesy of my awesome LFS who gave me an entire bag for free after hearing it was for my lettuce slugs!)

Snoodle left his shell, though being provided 4 different new shell options, he died quickly thereafter.

Month 7 July (Current Upgrade)

This week has been the biggest upgrade yet.

New Equipment

  • AI Prime 16HD LED
  • Running:
    • Dymitry Tumanov preset
    • Lunar cycle enabled
    • 30% acclimation mode for 10 days
    • 8 AM–8 PM schedule

Aquascape

  • Completely redesigned rockwork.
  • Added a cave system.
  • Improved swimming and hiding spaces.

Livestock

Added:

  • Two hammer corals
  • Captive-bred target mandarin dragonet
  • Large culture of copepods

Current livestock:

  • Captive-bred target mandarin dragonet
  • Sexy shrimp
  • Nassarius snail
  • Zoanthids
  • Palys
  • Two hammer corals
  • Macroalgae refugium
  • 2 dwarf blue legged hermit crabs

Lessons Learned

This tank has taught me:

āœ… Patience is more valuable than chasing numbers.

āœ… Stability beats perfection.

āœ… Small tanks can change very quickly.

āœ… Flow matters just as much as lighting.

āœ… Sometimes leaving the tank alone is the best decision.

āœ… Every setback is an opportunity to learn.

Goals

  • Continue growing copepod populations.
  • Watch the mandarin thrive.
  • Grow the hammer corals into colonies.
  • Continue expanding the zoa garden.
  • Add mushrooms when the tank is ready.
  • Continue documenting the reef as it matures.

Looking back over the past seven months, it's hard to believe how much this tiny reef has changed. It started as my first saltwater aquarium and has become a project that has taught me patience, observation, and a tremendous amount about reef ecology. There have been losses, unexpected challenges, and a lot of learning, but seeing the tank evolve into a healthy little ecosystem has made every step worth it.

Considering I'm studying marine conservation and hope to work with corals and sea slugs professionally one day, this tiny reef has become much more than an aquarium—it's my own little piece of the ocean. šŸ’™šŸŒŠ

Here's to many more reef adventures! šŸŖøšŸ šŸ’š
Will post updated pictures tomorrow when the sun comes up! šŸŒž
