Reefmat 500 motor

Hey everyone I was just curious about people's actual experience with the reef map 500 I am looking to get one but I also saw some things about the motors burning out really easy just wondering what people's overall experience with them is

I’ve had mine up and running for just over a year. No issues and is one of the best investments for time management you can do. I personally highly recommend it. Motor still sounds quiet and strong.

I had to replace mine once. I think i know what is the likely cause of the reported failures. When the roll has ended the motor still tries to advance the fleece but obviously can't and just burns up after being over worked one time too many. The sensor that tells the controller the fleece isn't advancing is in the motor so it doesn't send a signal it isn't advancing until after the motor attempts to do so and it can not
It would be like chaining your car to a building once a month then mashing the accelerator and expecting the car to move. Eventually the transmission is going to fail as a result. To prevent this it's best to replace the fleece while there is still a little left so the motor isn't over worked.
I figured this out after the motor failed on my reefmat 500. One good thing is the motors are only about $25 and are easy to change. I love mine in spite of this flaw.

EDIT: Mine was installed 10/2022 and I replaced the motor once.

Thank you I have the reef mat I just have to buy the hose and stuff but after hearing all these motor issues and things I didn't know if I wanted to install it or just run filter fleece and have a bigger fuge

Personally I think it would be worth getting the rest of the parts and installing. They save so much time and effort. Also due to the nature of how they work, your tank will be polished better and keeping nutrients lower. They really are great filters!

I wouldnt worry about the motor much. Mines was an early reefmat 1200 and RedSea replaced for free. Its one of those equipment that is worth the price! Will buy again
