Total roll for 1200 Matt is 115ft. Less for smaller model and not as wide.

I installed this unit about a week ago (1200 model) I am using the hang on method and sump mod. I also am going through a dino phase that I am actively and aggressively trying to eliminate. I am going through 115' rolls in 3 days. This is turning out to be quite an expensive filter! I am sure the dino issue isn't helping - but fer jesus - $10/day is starting to hurt .

so they would accept the 1.5inch from reefmat and 2inch roll
I installed the aftermarket roll. It is working great.

Looks like you are getting the filter media from the same source I got!
Very clever idea to get it to fit the smaller core!
It also looks like you have similar issues I have. The Aftermarket rollers are paper based so the material will stretched/shrunk on the pick up side if there are too much tension on the setup.
It is not an issue if the filter rollers openings are far away from the outter edges!
For my BM, it was an issue (it shrunk and allowed water to leak out of the filter roller.
As you can see, it shrunk by almost an inch (22mm). I ended up glue pieces of acrylic to close out the outter opening.

Mine shrunk, but the holes are still covered.

Mine shrunk, but the holes are still covered.
That is good as the Redsea doesn't have holes all the way out to the edges.
I found that the shrinkages were due to the tension on the pick-up side. The Aftermarket rolls appeared to be not at tightly rolled and have some material protruding.
Just keep in mind, I tried re-rolled one and it is working much better as well

I am running about 2200gph through mine, I use about 45-55inches a day. I tried going higher flow and lower flow for some reason used more material.

On the ReefMat, what is the point of the max auto advance setting?

Why would you want to adjust that? I'm sure there's a good reason, I just don't know what it is and haven't messed with mine yet. I left mine at the "stock" 1.2 to 1.4" setting for the time being.

Although I would think if you advanced too much fleece, it would really change the flow in the sump and mess with the water levels. I've already gotten a few short high sump level alarms on the apex that I assume we're the result of the fleece advancing and temporarily passing more water.

Thoughts?

Im looking at mine lasting about 3 months at the current rate. Only using about 12-18" a day and about 50" on the days I blow off the rocks and stir things up. My tank has never been cleaner!

I'm using red dragon as return pump , I'm very happy with Theiling.

What exactly do they mean by over skimming? What exactly is happening in that case and what should we be looking for?

This was from the ReefMat FAQ section: https://www.redseafish.com/support/faq/products/reefmat/tabs/faq/

  • The fleece material is inert and does not affect skimmer performance. However, the fleece-mat can trap waste particles that do cause over-skimming.
In the event of over-skimming, manually advance the fleece-mat until only clean mat remains below the water level.

Ive got a 500 with about 500-700 GPH going through it. Some days it uses 4" some days it uses 48". Im at 8 weeks on this roll with about 15 feet left. As long as the rolls last me 2-3 months each Im more than happy with it.

I would have gotten the 1200 for way more capacity but it wasnt going to fit my sump layout.

I'm using a 1200 on my Peninsula 500. Had some trouble getting it online, but it's been on the web for a week now and my daily average is a laughable 10". This roll is going to last me forever at this rate! I'm running about 1k gph through it and have it set to advance at 1.25". Don't want to advance anymore in fear of stripping nutrients out. So far so good, I really like this unit.

@mackdave - thanks for the detailed pics. Are you still using these and did you finish a roll?

A few questions:
1. Did you do anything special in Reefbeat to tell it the length of the material so it could give you the proper end of roll warning? Since it comes on a larger core, its less material than the Red Sea.
2. Can you share the exact specs you used when ordering? What micron, width and/or length of material? I also have the 1200.
3. Did the shrinkage cause any problems with either bypassing or being too tight on the take up spool or hard on the machine gears?

Maybe a little. Should I reduce the flow? I have a Cor15 pump at 30% and a Sicce SDC6 at 35%.
I’m running around 4’ a day on my 3rd roll. Mine is a predator tank and I had high nutrients and have been fighting Algea etc.

But I wouldn’t sacrifice flow for roller fleece. If it is filling up, it is getting it out of the tank.

I ordered these on amazon to go inside the roll. I will update when I change the roll.

Can you please update the link and provide the name of the roll adapters? The post now only shows the amazon logo and it’s not clickable — the name of the item would allow future users to search for them as well in case the link goes dead again.

For those running a ReefMat or any fleece roller type system and using an Apex with a ATO, how do you manage the constant high sump water level alarms? Seems like every time it advances the roll, more water passes through and triggers a high sump alarm for a while.

To reduce the alarm I have set the fleece roller advance to its lowest setting, the water level then stays quite stable. I am finding usage high though, I have 100 Gal with SPS and LPS but only 1 fish as I had an Ich wipe-out, but am still going though a roll in about 4 to 5 weeks, after 3 months!
