Refugium location? Fiji cube 24 sump

I recently purchased this FIJI cube 24 sump, I was wondering if I could possibly use the protein skimmer section as the refugium section? The only issue I see is the opening after the drain section…

There is no reason you couldn’t use that section. Water is flowing in one direction through the sump and should keep chaeto in the skimmer area. I’m not sure about a heater in there though. The intended area works great for me. It’s plenty big enough. I have to use a coarse sponge filter to keep the chaeto from getting into pump chamber. The plate they supply doesn’t allow much flow before it’s over the top.
