I recently won a brand new Orphek Natura iCon Max light as a part of the recent Reef2Reef partner drive. While I am extremely grateful about winning it, now that I have it in hand I have no idea what to do with it and I would appreciate some suggestions.
I have always kept nano tanks. My largest tank is my current 40 gallon cube, which was only meant to be temporary anyways. I was going to replace it with a ~100 gallon waterbox, innovative marine, eshopps aquarium in a year or so, but now I feel a bit obligated to put a very nice piece of equipment to use over it collecting dust in the closet
However, I also wanted to legitimize my coral frag side hustle. I plan on getting my Florida aquaculture license soon so I can actually sell some coral frags without getting into trouble (up until now I've just been trading for other corals and store credit). I planned on getting a couple 48" low-boys and building a rack system. This light has a 48"x30" spread but I feel like it would absolutely cook corals in a shallow low-boy aquarium. There is the alternative of a Fiji Cube shallow/frag tank which is around 15 inches deep, but considerably more expensive than the low-boys.
Whatever I end up doing, it will probably wait until Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals. I'm already eye-balling the Fiji Cube 20% off and Waterbox 20% off sales, but I'm really hoping the eshopps Mariner 100 goes on sale because I think that's the best bang-for-the-buck tank on my list. In fact, I bet 120 tickets on it for the partner drive raffles but didn't end up winning it...
Anyways, what would you do if you had this light as the first piece of an unplanned aquarium setup?
