I have a forest of mud tube feather dusters in my refugium. There is an ATS in the main sump, though.

Don't know if you care, but marine pure leaches some form of aluminum into water.
This is as tested by ICP, which finds any form of Aluminum, even those which are harmless.
I had the 4 inch blocks in my refugium for 6 months and then removed them, returning the ICP test levels to normal.
I really like the surface area though.

Ooo I didn't know that. I would have to think about removing the bioballs then. Did you replace it with something else?

Live rock.
I dont know if the Marinepure was detrimental, my tank was young so had no sensitive things yet.
Mostly kenya tree and xenia at that time, which will grow under adverse conditions.

For those that have pieces of live rock or seachem matrix what do you to keep detritus from building up?

Nothing here. Many types of CuC & Pods will consume it or it breaks down into nitrates which feeds the algae. At the right scale, it’s all part of a balanced ecosystem.

Below are pix of my fuge progress. I have a couple of peppermint shrimp and a Sea hare that keeps the hair algae at bay, although i believe its starting to eat the Chaeto! I turn off the flow value and feed Phyto weekly and that pays off big time..... The fuge has massive populations of pods, and in the main display at night it looks like snow. I also see that my anthias freely feed on the numerous pods floating in the water column during the day
