I’m looking into adding a 55 gallon remote drum for the purpose easy water changes. My thinking is to have a pump in the sump that would push water through pex pipe, under the house, into my shop and into a sealed drum and return back to the sump. When I get ready to do a water changes, I valve out the dum, empty it, refill with new water then valve it back in. Is this a bad idea? Also, would there be any benefit in adding a 2nd drum with a deep sand bed (8”) and rock that would simply sit in series with the water change drum?

My suggestion is to research "automatic water change" or "awc". When there are multiple pumps or when you have to valve things on and off there are risks. If things can go wrong (including getting distracted and forgetting the water change), then they will. Good luck on whatever direction you choose!
