That’s what my filter looks like . It’s never a set and forget . It clogs easily within 2 to 3days . I have had the woven material so clogged that the suction from the power head started to suck so much that it deformed the the filter roll . I have bought several rolls now so I always have some cleaned and dry while others are being soaked . It’s just to swap out . I guess I can call it my filter sock .

Crazy! Ya I like running the canister over filter socks. I’ll probably grab two more micron filters from petco tomorrow. It’s smart to have a rotation ready for quick swapping. Wasn’t expecting so much crud since I netted out already pounds of it. I guess all the small flakes add up quickly.
Once these uglies are done I might try it out as a diatom filter as well.

Many want to add this, lower or raise that, kill something else, or grow stuff to control algae and the “uglies” when the easiest and most effective way is simply removal. I have been using canister type filters for temporary cleaning since the early 80’s. Back then the best was a Vertex Diatom, unfortunately they don’t exist anymore, but any canister will work….well done!
My whole reason to start playing with this filter was to use it as a diatom filter. it says that you can add diatomaceous earth to it . Just that at petco it was a100bucks . So that is why I did a diy . Had a cheap old school power head and adapted a pvc tube from Home Depot . That pvc tube tightly fits into the opening of the marineland micron filter . I just have been real busy with other projects that I haven’t followed thru on the diatom filter , but I am close just haven’t tested it . The issue with the marineland filter is that it has black plastic housing . That prevents me from seeing what happens inside the filter . Like the vortex was . So I have bought clear plastic containers that can be tightly closed from Walmart . I have holes drilled and now have old bulkheads that I had from many years before . Put valves on it , just need to follow thru on testing . So the real purpose of this was to filter water from a QT tank . I was thinking that I could filter down to 5microns with diatomaceous earth . Thus maybe eliminating ick , velvet , flukes , Uronema by filtering . . That with a uv filter , and hydrogen peroxide also may help . Whole idea is to QT without copper , formaldehyde or chloroquine phosphate . Maybe three different tanks each with own diatom filter to do tank transfer

I feel so low tech... I cut a hole in the lid of a 5 gallon bucket for a filter sock to fit in. Siphone into the sock and when bucket is closeish to being full I just dump the water back in the tank.
