Removing fine particles

I have a 30 gallon tank. For filtration, I use a canister filter. I tried putting polishing pads on the last layer of the canister filter a few days ago, and within a few hours it got clogged and started leaking. Any better way to do this, i.e. use new equipment etc? Or should I just keep changing the polishing pads before it starts getting clogged.

There are some pretty fine particles that keep floating around and it's annoying me
