I hope you guys can see the picture clearly. Its a pretty rough scetch. But the idea I have and have questions about is making this acrylic tower box that I would fill with rubble from top to bottom. The top would fit my drain. This box would sit in my sump and empty through the small drilled holes at the bottom. My question is if this would be a good repalcement of my filter sock? I was even thinking about adding a dozen emerald crabs to the rubble to help eat all the nasty stuff. What do you guys think?

it would just sit in the sump where my tank drains into my sump. it can be taken out anytime, the crabs would be in there eating all the nasty stuff they would normaly eat in my display.

that can be fixed by putting an acrylic screen on the lid, that would also disperse the water as it drains.
