I am redoing the return from my sump. I have a 55 gal tank. The return pump is rated at 550 gph.

I was wondering if doing a spray bar across the back or having the pipe split and have it come into the tank from both sides.

Are you wanting to create flow in the tank from your return pump? If so use 1 outlet for more velocity. If you are just wanting to return the water to the DT then the spray bar will work. IMO I would use a larger return pump. Something closer to the 1000gph range.

Well it for flow. The reason I'm asking is I'm going with duel 1" overflow pipes that are going in the center of the tank on the back glass.

So if I went with 1 outlet coming in from the side would both sides of the tank have good flow?

Only the side with the return pipe would have good flow. The more outlets you have running off your return pump the less velocity each outlet will have.
You can split the return line. but you will only get about 200gph out of each outlet. That isnt very much flow at all

I understand that but until I can upgrade my pump it will have to do

You said you would use a return pump rated at 1000 gph. Would the over flow I'm using work on a pump that big?

You will be fine 1'' pvc will handle 1300 gph at full siphon . If you use a pump rated for 1000gph by the time you get to the tank (head loss) you will be well within the safe zone

That what I was thinking. Someone told me anything over 600gph use 1.25 inch
