Return pump plumbing

been awhile since I had to do this. My return pump outlet is 1" and the connection for the return at the tank is the glass holes 1/2". Do I run 1" all the way from the pump then step down right before the tank return or run 1/2" from the pump all the way?

Personally I would run the 1" as far up as you can and reduce at the tank.

Agree with the above post and your depiction of intent, that would be a good option. I would recommend supporting of the 1" with a bracket to minimize any stress on the 1/2" connection point.

Double ditto to all above posts. The larger diameter pipe will reduce frictional losses and provide greater return flow to your DT.

And was thinking I needed to support the drain and return pvc somehow

Yes, you don't want your bulkheads supporting piping and fittings. I would also use a union and a short section of flexible vinyl tubing directly off the pump discharge to break up any vibration and noise and to reduce ant stresses from misalignments often found in rigid piping. Your system will be quieter and it will give you a place to disconnect the pump for cleaning and maintenance.

+1 on using flex tubing. I personally like flexible PVC, it has the same dimensions as standard PVC and you glue it just like regular PVC. I personally like to use rigid against my stand where I am able to secure it, and use flexible PVC with unions for the connection to the return pump and to the tank return. I find it allows me to support the weight of the lines with the rigid pipe that is well mounted, eliminates a number if 90 and 45 degree fittings and allows for easy hookup and maintenance. I do the same thing with my drains as well .

If you find flexible PVC is transmitting more vibrations than you want there are other options. I have always wanted to try a short length of silicone tube, but had the need for it.
