I am going to go the following:
1) do a 50% waterchange with the new filters over a 2 week period.

2) use vibrant and see how that works out.

3) get a couple of sea urchins( I am thinking tuxedos)

4) if all the above fail, go the peroxide route

What would be the typical procedure? I have never done it, full strength 50/50, soak/brush, pour?
I thing the misses used tap water to top off when you were out of town....just a guesss

What I've done is take the rock out and apply 3% hydrogen peroxide to all algae using a dropper, pipette, etc. I think I let it sit on there for about 5-10 minutes IIRC. Then let it soak in saltwater for a few minutes to dilute before putting it back in the tank. By rinsing it you can use a good amount of hydrogen peroxide on the outer surface of the rock.

Also I'm curious where you got your rock from. You may event want to use a little GFO to keep it from coming back. Obviously with SPS you don't want to hit the phosphates too hard so a little will go a long way.

Urchins will mow through any coralline you have which also opens it up for undesirable algae to take hold.

I think this is as good a time as any to start listing out all the coral in the tank.
Most are frags which were accumulated over the last 1 year, except for a few colonies.

Will add pictures when i clear out the algal monstrosity

I had a bad gha outbreak after my tank maintenance guy forgot to plug my heater back in for two weeks. I took out my rocks and scrubbed them with a stiff brush in a bucket of tank water. I siphoned all my sand. This was hard to do with some rocks that had frags on them. I had to do a few rocks weekly for a couple weeks. This made a huge difference. I also got a tuxedo and long spine urchin. My tank was covered, not as bad as yours. Gha, red and green turf algae. The urchins are awesome. Here is a pic with coralline on the glass, no judging, lol. Tanks acrylic and 19 years old.

Only a couple tufts of gha left.

Here is an update after 2 dosing of vibrant over the last week.

Combined with 2 40% water changes over the last 5 days with new rodi filters. My old rodi was registering 59 tds!!! This may have been one of the contributing factors!

Quite some progress!

But I started noticing 2 issues.

1) my Duncan coral has some weird spots on its skeleton
2) one of my sps showed some signs of tissue being peeled off. I dragged it above the tissue loss and it is currently on a frag plug on the sandbed
3) my Jf sector 001 favia showed some signs of tissue loss as well.

I think I will scale back vibrant to once a week and see if that fixed things.

But is there a way I can help my Duncan coral? I am very attached to it as I grew it from 5 heads to its current size over 4 years.. Lugols dip? Coral rx dip?

This pic is under only white lights.. you can see how much the algae has scaled back already.. only in 2 weeks!

Only issue now is that the algae when it was growing and covered most of the surfaces, irritated the corals near the bases and the Coralshave lost tissue and polyps.. will the tissue grow back? Or is this a lost cause?

thankfully everything is running smoothly since i moved to the triton system. Parameters are extremely stable at :

Have not measured trace elements yet.. But i am still doing a few water changes.. about 1 a month just to replenish things.
