RO/DI

So I have the opportunity to get an iSpring RO/DI system from them for $50. I was wondering if it is worth it or if I should splurge on a BRS RO/DI filter. Also if I do go for BRS, I’m think to get a 4 stage. Would that be enough or should I get a 5 stage. Also should I get plus or regular version. Keep in mind I don’t want to install this permanently because I’m in college and want to take it home when I’m done.

I mean, if you can get the 5-stage for $50, I don't see why you wouldn't get that one.

I'd go with the $50 filter too. It "looks" like the standard parts you'd see on any of the major brands.

How many stages is really determined by what's in your source water, but typically on a 4 stage RODI the last stage is a single canister of DI resin. Going to a 5 stage RODI typically adds a second DI stage for a total of two. Having two DI stages helps to more efficiently use the DI resin, saving you money in the long run. Go with a dual DI system, you'll be better off over time

i think this is only a 1 stage di but you could replumb it and add a di cannister instead of 2 carbons or 2 sediment filters. but for $50 it is a great deal esp if it comes with new filters

i would just take the clear canister* and use it for color changing di with a prepacked unit from brs, but i would only do it once you are changing out the filters for the first time. seeing the outside of the sediment filter shows nothing as it is the first part to get dirty*

How many stages isn't about your tank, it's about what's in your source water

The BRS RODI stuff goes on sale all the time. Wait for a major holiday or big sale and compare prices then. I haven’t done the exact math recently but BRS systems aren’t too much more expensive then replacing all the filters/membrane/DI resin when on sale.

Always think about the future tank size and what size you might have 3-5 years from now. RO/DI systems last a LONG time so if you wait till brs has a sale which they probably will for st. Patricks day in 3 weeks.

If you are concerned about the water, I would look into your city's water chemistry. They usually have this stuff posted online. That would help you determine what kind of RO unit you need. For the average person, I would argue that a 7-stage is overkill unless you have really dirty water.
