I use special grade sand. Big enough to not cloud up and allow enough flow. No lights during the cycle. It only encourages nuisance algae.

Welcome to R2R!!! I always recommend Carib Sea Special grade sand. You can blast it pretty hard and it stays puts.

Welcome to the reef. Lights off for cycle. Really not needed and could promote algae growth you don’t want. Lights on once you have completed the cycle and your parameters are right.
