Rock wool looking thing?

So what might this thing be? Searching turns up pineapple sponges, but this thing doesn't seem to have any central mass to it. Just looks like a tuft of rock wool and I have none of that in my house. Thanks!

It's in more or less direct light, but it may have been shaded by a piece of coral until recently. The rock it's on does have sponges inside of a similar color, but they're solid pieces. The blue ring is where it's at.
