I am getting ready for an order of fish on Tuesday and started making my water for my QT tanks . So I turned the RO unit on went and sat down with my wife to watch a movie. Then there was a loud bang and a thud in the floor . I went to the basement to see what happen. I honestly thought a tank broke . I look around and I found this , one of my canisters blew the top off . In my 25+ years have never seen or heard of this Happing . I will saw the unit is probably almost 30 years old .

Are you only hand tightening, just snug? The wrench is only from removal.

You hook it up to the hydrant? 😂

In all seriousness, seems like a serious clog and the pressure built?

The canisters are at line pressure when the output is off.

The failure is likely material fatigue from related pressure cycles over decades. The plastic may have brittled over time or had a tiny flaw that grew with each pressure cycle.

I think you’re right . It’s an old Kent unit so I definitely got my moneys worth out of it .

No clog swapped in my little di resin cartridge and it worked perfectly fine . I think old age got it .
Clog would not matter. The housing are at line pressure when the output is shut off. The same housing are used inline for sinks, refrigerators and other line pressure applications.
