Hi guys, so I have had this unit for way over 5 years, I used it for a little while but stoped using it when it started reading some TDS.

Since the filters in the unit have been on for way way over 5 years I would like to give it a fresh start but after reading and watching some videos on ro units I'm still a bit lost. What would you guys recomend me to buy filter wise and maybe performance wise to make it more efficient.

With the help of the folks at BRS I have this links so far

https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/brs-4-stage-value-replacement-filter-kit.html https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/75-gpd-reverse-osmosis-membrane-dow-filmtec.html https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/omnipure-inline-carbon-block.html

What you guys think?

Here's my unit

My thoughts.....

I'd purchase THIS KIT from BRS to handle the three canisters and the DI canister. The separate carbon polishing filter is for drinking water systems and suggest bypassing that filter for your aquarium use. Note, I recommended the above kit because it comes with everything, but I personally purchase my DI resin from eBay, while buying THIS KIT from BRS.

I also think I see a 3 - 5 gallon storage tank under the sink....and you don't want to use this for aquarium use....it's for a drinking water system, and will only add TDS to your water.

And finally, I'd also purchase a dual in-line TDS meter (EXAMPLE) to monitor TDS after membrane and after DI resin. This will tell you when you need to change DI resin. I'd also put on a three way valve (HERE) to bypass your DI resin until breakthrough TDS drops (about the first five minutes after startup). This will greatly extend your DI resin.

Thank you very much, so I really dont need that carbon polisher or the tank.

I'll take a look at the unit once I'm home to make sure I can bypass them without issues

Do you mind sharing the EBAY seller you are purchasing from, and the specific product? I'm assuming there is a savings there...

I can't find the info because I last purchased in 2016, and that history is no longer available. However, I'm 99 percent sure it was from Filters4you. Here are two examples:

3.25 lbs for $25.99

4 lbs for 31.99

Hi all, I came across this thread and pondering some questions about an RO/DI unit we are looking to install. I am thinking to set up a BRS 5 or 6 stage filter in the garage. However my wife is requesting to utilize the unit for drinking water as well (RO - Only obviously).

I've asked a few plumbers for estimates to install a line from my future garage RO/DI unit to a sink with a drinking water small faucet.

Now I have a few concerns.

1) Does anyone have experience with splitting RO/DI unit to two RO for drinking, and DI for saltwater? Where do you keep your drinking water reservoir ? Is it plastic or glass?

2) Remineralization - I read that you want to remineralize water, however a rep from BRS said you only want to remineralize if it goes through the DI stage. If it goes through RO, i guess you don't need to remineralize it? Does it benefit to still remineralize?

3) We don't have a water softener, and our water is pretty hard. Will this matter for saltwater aquariums if it still goes through the RO/DI system?

4) Lastly, another option is this guy: https://www.amazon.com/LiquaGen-Por...01MUCW2OP/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

However this confuses me even more. The water goes through an Alkaline/Carbon filter before DI ! I guess this raises PH & ALK? Is this OK for salt water?

If anyone has any any thoughts regarding my above questions I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for reading!

Yes, it can be done. I'd suggest putting the storage tank (typically 3 - 5 gallons) under the sink where the RO faucet will be located. This tank has a bladder and fills on demand, which results in "breakthrough" TDS getting into this water. So it will have some TDS, making it drinkable (and tasty).

At the RO unit you'll install a three way valve (LIKE THIS ONE), that will normally be set to feed RO water to the tank. When the valve is turned, water will be directed to the DI canister to make aquarium water. Once done with making aquarium water, flip the valve back to feed the storage tank.

Hope this was clear.

Hi Redfishbluefish,

Thanks for your response. That does make sense. I am still confused regarding the Alkaline/Carbon and why it needs to go through that before DI to get 0 TDS. I feel like this should only go through the drinking water, and not the RO/DI water. Do I really want the ALK and PH of my RO/DI water to be increased to 9+ ?

I would not do that Alk / Mineral thing....get a unit that does not have that option. If RO only water goes to the drinking tank, it will have sufficient TDS (minerals) to give the water the right taste.
