Hi all

Please can you help, I’m in a bit of a panic

I’m currently doing a Fishless cycle and I used this clip to hold something in my tank and I’ve just noticed it’s rusting! I’ve removed it and it’s been in the tank less than 24 hours. Do I need to be concerned?

Feel like an idiot for using it in the first place, didn’t think about the metal

Remove it from the tank, and you will be fine. If you are still unsure I would do a water change to be safe

I just panicked because I’m so careful about getting contaminates in the tank and I’ve only just set this one up, it’s my first marine tank too. I was so annoyed with myself when I saw the rust

J,
Don’t panic. Contaminants come in with the air as well: carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen etc…….

In my early 55 years of reefkeeping, I operated a 150G Dutch Systems reef tank with steel wool in back chamber, per their instructions. I now dose Seachem iron. Go figure.

PS: I knew that I was a “Rebel with a Cause”, when I dosed RIDX bacteria into this tank.

“RIDX: septic tank treatment”

Thanks everyone, that’s such a relief. I’ll do a small water change but good to know it’s nothing to worry about, panic over 😂

Doesn't @Paul B keep a container of nails in his tank for the iron?
Yes he does. Actually, the nails are rusting in a jar and when he remembers, he pours rusty water into his tank. He also digs up marsh mud to add to his system.
