Sicce SDC 9.0 sump return pump rusted impeller, split open. Can't say how long it was split, maybe several months.

Will water change help in eliminating the heavy metals?

Right now I only have softies and some LPS, although they do seem impacted and receding.

Did a 30% WC several weeks ago after I replaced the impeller.

Polyfilter or cuprisorb
For the sake of argument, IF I were to do a 100% WC, would that eliminate a majority of the heavy metals? Or do they get absorbed by rocks/etc. and leach back out into the freshly changed water? In reality, I'm only set up to do 30% WCs, so it would take roughly 8 WC's to effectively change 96%.

Its a 220G tank, is it practical and/or effective to use polyfilter or cuprisorb in place of increased WCs?

And another question I forgot to ask, what heavy metals can I expect elevated levels of from the impeller magnet? Iron? Likely not Copper though I assume?

All of the questions have a correct answer and without knowing the material used to make the impeller and the materials in the tank that could possibly react with the unknown material I would still recommend an inexpensive Polyfilter to start removing any of these things from the water as cheap insurance against these unknown parameters.

A polyfilter is the simplest way, and probably the most efficient compared to water changes and substrate charges.

The problem is that we don’t know what is in the water and what concentrations. An ICP test might show what is present but you might wait a week for results whereas the filter can get to work right away because right now it’s a Just in Case response. You might be fine doing nothing.
