Besides saltwater I also have KOI in a 150 gallon built tank outside. It used to be just a fountain display, we (wife and I) decided to get the stuff for KOI fish. So we found the needed things and proceeded to get it going. At first we bought just a few KOI to see how they would do. I bought 3 small ones about 1.5" long, we had them for a month before we decided to get more. The next group we bought 4 KOI along with 6 sucker fish to keep the tank clean. The KOI were between 2 - 3.5" the suckers were just little babies less than an inch long.
I do water changes one time a month when I am home, so the water is in the tank about 2 months before I change it again. Don't forget it is outside I live in Philippines so it gets natural water changes when it rains. Well today was cleaning day, I caught all the fish 12 in total, 1 of the sucker fish died after we got it. Everything was going good, got the pressure washer out cleaned the tank nice and clean. Got the tank cleaning equipment all clean added water, the tank was about half full I started putting the fish back in.
I went in the house to get a glass of water, its still hot here. We started picking up all the mess that we made, my wife noticed the water was murky looking. I didn't think anything about it and continued to clean up. Came in and sat down on the couch for a little break. My Mother-in-law came inside yelling the fish the fish. I went ou looked and 3 of my babies are floating :eek::eek::eek::eek:. I jumped in the tank had mom in law get the hose and buckets I started grabbing the fish and putting them in the freshwater. pulled out all the rocks and cleaned it again. SO far I have lost 4 and the other 2 are not looking that good. The sucker fish don't seem to be harmed by whatever was in the water.
Like I mentioned earlier the fish where small babies when we got them, before they died they had grown between 6 - 8" my wife is distraught, she won't even feed the fish inside now. I dont want them to die too. She will be fine in a few days we will go get some more babies and raise them again. I still dont know what got in the water, I have a 3 year old, but he cant get to any of the bad chemicals they are all put up way out of his reach. Maybe it was just a fluke I really dont know. Here are a few pictures of the tank. The yellow one has already died, I am hoping the other 2 will survive. Dont mind my big feet in the picture lol.
