I have mechanical filtration, a skimmer, UV, algae scrubber, heaters, probes, dosing lines, reactors, and a return pump. Can you have all that stuff hang off the back or inside the tank sure but it’s not what I want to see when I look at my reef tank.

Absolutely no argument here, I think this is a spot-on reply, though if some are very new to the hobby and intimidated by drilling tanks and running and plumbing a sump, or they are just on a tight budget, there's nothing wrong with a standard tank, hang on gear, and everything else that goes into the tank. This isn't going to be a museum quality display, but it gets you in the reefing game, which for many is a great start 🙂

If the budget and nerves allow it, an AIO is great to hide gear, and a sump is even better at hiding gear as well as being extremely versatile.

I'd go sump if possible, but it's entirely possible to run a tank without one.

I started with an AIO and it has been a great learning tool. My corals somehow managed to explode in it and so now my 100g is dry plumbed and about ready to get set up for a transfer down the road, hopefully sooner than later. I don’t want to see things but I also wasn’t sure I could do this so I have no regrets with how I started. For me sump and all that go on below is ultimately the goal but if you have nano tanks it seems like potential overkill.

I’m thinking about getting a new 30 gallon with built in filter and using my extra 10 gallon as a sump

I'm going to say it...... FRIEND!!! Just kidding, I hope we can be friends 🙂

When you say a tank with a built in filter, do you mean an All-In-One tank that has the filter built into the back? If so, this is a great way to go, and there would be no sump needed in this situation.

I hope that helps - FRIEND 🙂

Sumps are nice to throw all of your equipment down there and have it out of sight, out of mind. Plus, you can have a lot of bonus equipment within a sump. If you have the space, I think they are worth it.

Sorry, I may have been confusing you for another poster that was giving me a hard time for calling them "friend" lol!

If you're going to get an All-In-One (AIO) tank with the filter section in the back, then you don't need a sump. I've seen where some will rig up a sump to an AIO, but I don't think it's necessary. Many run AIO's without an additional sump. The ack filter section will hide your equipment with an AIO.

Good luck!

Go with your AIO and leave it at that to start…I added a protein skimmer in the back compartment and a small UV sterilizer and like I said earlier I’ve got such amazing growth my corals have already outgrown the tank! I’m a go with the flow person so I only added as I found the need…now look where that’s gotten me! 😂😂😂
