Saltwater reservoir question

I have a 44g Brut trash can in my basement that I use a pond pump to pump the new water up stares. It's super powerful but dose not get all the water from the bottom of the can. Prob like 3 gallons left over.

I even got a pump that sucks from the bottom. What are my options? A different pump?

Is there something I can install on the trash can to drain it completely what's left over? I don't want that water sitting in there.

Any advice would be great.

What pump would work to pump about 15' up from my basement? Looking not to spend a lot of $.

How about a big Jaebo. That way it could be a backup for your tank in an emergency. You can use Jaebo's both in and out of water.

Not bad ;) what gph you think I need? And 3/4” will make it up there? Right now I’m using 1 1/4” flex pvc and it’s a B$&#€ to handel lol.

Would I drill a 1” hole on the bottom of my can then put a bulk head on it?

If the bottom is flat, yes, use a bulkhead. If it's not flat, use a uniseal. If you buy them from BRS, they tell you what size to drill for bulkhead or uniseal. I use a Jebao DC4000 to pump, using a 5/8" RV water hose 5o' from my garage to my tank. Granted it's not pumping up 15' but it does the job. So I'd look at the "head rate" and get the biggest Jebao that will fit in your sump if needed.

I don't believe the DC pumps are pressure pumps. If you're popping a hole in the Brute, I'd go with an external pressure pump....something like an Iwaki or Pan World. Could probably pick one up used for a good price.

It really depends on the flow rate you're looking for....an Iwaki 55 RT2 would give you about 500 gph at 15 foot head through 3/4 pipe. Check out THIS head loss calculator and the various Iwaki pumps. I don't see PanWorld's on this calculator, but they are the same pumps as Iwaki's....just need to know the number conversions from PanWorld to Iwaki. Either one of these pumps are work horses and will last a long time.

So I think im going to get a Pan World 100PX it has 21' max head. Then use a uniseal on the bottom of the trash can with a 45d inside pointing down to collect all the water vs putting it on blocks with a bulkhead under it. It would work better going from the lowest point on the side as thats the lowest point of the can, the center is raised in the can. Used unions and connect to pump then get a 3/4" flex line to the tank. I think that would be best

My only recommendation is that instead of a 45 elbow, use a 90 (with a short piece of pipe to reach the bottom of the can) that has "sawteeth" cut into it. This is what I did with the MAG 9.5 that I use in a Brute to get the last bit of water out. I used a small round file to put the sawteeth into the pipe. I think you'll get the idea from seeing my pump:

Just finished! Went from a 1 1/4” tube to 3/4. Got the 100x pan world pump. Got my 3/4 tubbing close to the bottom with a 90d and put some edges in it to help suction. Ran new line, looks like it’s good to go. I’ll test it next week when I do a water change.
