I have a 90g with no sump. I do use a skimmer however. Make sure you keep the fish to a low number and do frequent water changes. Good amount of rock will help also.
 
Welcome to R2R! You will find lots of useful information here. Sounds like you may be a DIY. That forum has lots of money saving ideas. I wish you success. I must say though, seems like every time I turn around I find something else I "need" to buy. I'll be watching to follow your choices and discoveries along the way!

You may want to start a build thread in the members tanks forums. You can easily track your project there.
